Moi

My mom was sitting in a diner in Shreveport, LA looking for ways to make her scrambled eggs more appetizing. She was pregnant with me and generally dissatisfied with most culinary offerings. She picked up a bottle of Tabasco sauce. The label read “Made on Avery Island, Louisiana.” My mom knew this was a sign—she had found a remedy for her bland breakfast, and her husband was from Louisiana. She decided right then to name me Avery.

Some people might object to being named after a condiment, but I get where she was coming from. She was looking for something bright and spicy and exciting. Aren’t we all?

I’d been working in marketing for over ten years when I started to feel burnt out. It all felt the same—the jargon, the politics, the overused words and ideas. I quit my job and began to teach swimming lessons to kids. But even when doing laps I couldn’t help but remember my old clients and ideas I had for them. I realized it wasn’t marketing I hated, it’s the way most marketing is done.

my name is avery is an agency focused on helping women-led businesses promote themselves in a way that feels specific, exciting, and original. Marketing is about expression. It should be fun and personal, and like most good things, done by women. It doesn’t have to be boring. Life is too short to settle for bland eggs!
